Beauty Modeling

Behind the shot

My name is Rich Heaton and I am a Beauty Photographer. I have been shooting for about 5 years and I love shooting beauty more than just about anything I can think of. I also love just looking at amazing Beauty Editorials and shots.

I was having dinner with a very close friend / model who I have worked with for a while now and we were talking about some of the qualities that make an amazing model. We both agree that looks do play a big part BUT equally as important is the models ability to “Give” of him or herself during the shoot.

It reminded me of a recent shoot that I did with this model, Marla and how I felt she was SO strong in posing and her trying so hard to really make every look and every thing we were doing turn out the best that it possibly could. She really didn’t hold back in our art together and it really came through

in the images.

I wanted to have relatively flat light but with some shadow as well so I shot them with an octobox with double diffusion high and more to the left of the model then I usually would. With the help of such a talented makeup artist, model, heavy shadows and an amazing retoucher, here is what we got.

I am very happy with experimenting with lighting, with how much our model gave of herself and of how much that added to the end results of what we got. If you are a model and wanting to get into any kind of photography try to really let go and be the character the team is going for. Try to really make it work. Give it your all and leave nothing back. It will make a world of difference in your work.
